UMP bagged medals in SUKANUN

Melaka, 27 July - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) created history by winning medals in its first participation in the Government Statutory Bodies Sports Championship or Kejohanan Sukan Badan Berkanun 2017 (SUKANUN 2017) held in Ayer Keroh, Melaka recently.

The UMP Sepak Takraw team managed to win clinch the silver medal in the Inter-Team Sepak Takraw after losing to the team from Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) which had some members who were players from the national team in a fiercely contested match that lasted two hours and ended with the score of 2-1.

According to the Manager of the UMP Sepak Takraw team who was also the UMP Youth & Sports Senior Officer Mr Al-Muhaimin Ali, despite a total of 61 government statutory bodies participating in this year’s championship, the UMP team was able to show excellent performance by emerging as group champion after defeating Lembaga Pembangunan Keluarga Terengganu (LPKT) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) 2-0 at the group stage.

The UMP Sepak Takraw continued to excel by defeating the team from the University of Malaya (UM) 2-0 in the Second Round stage, followed by a win over the RISDA team 2-0 in the Quarter Final stage and another win over the Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ) team at the Semi Final stage before meeting the team from Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) in the Final stage.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Centre for Sports and Culture of UMP Mr Abd Rahman Hj Safie said that the success of the UMP team was an indicator of continued excellent performance of last year’s team which had emerged as the champion in the Inter-Varsity Staff Championship 2016.

“The commitment of the team is shown with its organized training throughout this year to defend the gold medal won last year with their participation in 2017 championship currently held at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Tanjung Malim, Perak from 29th of July until 5th of August 2017,” he said.

The Director hoped that the UMP sepak takraw team would continue to achieve more success in the next and future editions of the championship and this would be emulated by all athletes and UMP teams in other sport events in every championship in their efforts to bring glory to UMP on a par with other great teams.
