Tanjung Malim, 5 August - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) will be hosting the 42nd Inter-Varsity Staff Sports Championship or Kejohanan Sukan Staf Antara Universiti Malaysia (SUKUM) next year. In the closing ceremony of SUKUM 2017, the Registrar of UMP, Mr Abd. According to Mr Abd. Hamid, UMP had already been making plans with early preparations to host next year’s event. This would not only involve UMP’s readiness in hosting the event but also preparations by teams and athletes who would be participating in the 2018 championship.
“We are also proud of the success of athletes and their contingents who become the source of inspiration and morale boost for other teams in their preparation, especially in the aspects of selection of athletes and more organized training in order to create stronger and better teams to win more medals in the next 43rd SUKUM,” he said.
The 2017 edition ended with UMP achieving the 15th place, bringing home four medals, two gold and two bronze. However, this year’s greatest achivenement was the UMP Sepak Takraw who successfully defended the gold medal won last year by defeating the team from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) 2-0, which was represented by former national team players and state players. Apart from that, the other gold medal was won by the Ping Pong Mixed Doubles team which also defeated the team from UKM 3-1 in the final.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Singles Ping Pong also bagged the bronze medal after losing 0-3 to the defending champion, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in the Semi Final stage. The other bronze medal for UMP came from the Futsal team. This was the UMP Futsal team’s first re-appearance SUKUM after 4 years out of action.
