UMP targets more gold medals in SUKUM 2017
Kuantan, 28 July - A total of 100 Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) athletes would participate in the 42nd Inter-Varsity Staff Championship or Kejohanan Sukan Staf antara Universiti Awam Malaysia (SUKUM) to be held from 29th of July until 5th of August 2017 hosted by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Tanjung Malim, Perak.
UMP would participate in seven events: sepak takraw, men’s futsal, men’s hockey, team golf, women’s volleyball, ping pong and archery.
The flag-giving ceremony was graced by the Director of the Centre for Sports and Culture of UMP, Mr Abd Rahman Hj Safie, who handed the flag to the Head of the Contigent, Mr Muhammad Syazwan Husin in an event that took place at the Sports Complex Arena, UMP Gambang Campus. The Director said that such high level of sportsmanship would enable UMP athletes to compete in the championship and maintain the good image and reputation of the University at the same time.
“All members of the UMP contingent should make full use of this opportunity to achieve success in their respective sport events. We believe that such spirit and hard work will bring success to all of our athletes,” he said.
He added that winning and losing would be part of the game. Nevertheless, the Director urged all UMP participants to take the challenge by showing their highest level of commitment during the championship. He also hoped that all UMP athletes would give their best effort, remain focused and compete thoughout the championship with a strong sense of sportsmanship.
Meanwhile, it was anticipated that the return of the UMP men’s hockey team in this year’s championship after out of action for three years would result in bringing home outstanding achievement.
The head of the UMP contigent, Mr Muhammad Syazwan Husin, who was a UMP participant in athletics hoped that they would be able to win gold medals and bring glory to the University.
For next year’s edition of the 43rd SUKUM, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) has been given the honour to host this annual sports meet.
